weekend recap
We were scheduled to fly out on Thursday evening. We checked out flight before leaving home to ensure it was on time and not canceled, since many were that day because of the terrorist bust in the UK. It was on time. We got to the airport and stood in line to rebook our tickets because in the 20 minutes it took to get to the airport, the flight was delayed two hours and we wouldn't make our connection to Tallahassee. Apparently before that they had absolutely no idea that the flight would be delayed. So now we had to figure out how to get home. Every single one of our friends was at a baseball game, so we had to take a cab home. We asked before we left if there would be any reimbursement since we were not planning to spend $40 to get back home, but the USAir lady wouldn't even talk to us. She was totally and utterly rude and told us to call customer affairs, even though the previous lady told us we could talk to her since she was a manager. So we went home in a cab that decided it was necessary to make or receive about 5 calls on his cell phone, kind of annoying. We woke up early the next morning and drove ourselves to the airport instead of trying to rouse one of our friends who had been out late the night before. So now we would also have to pay for parking :(
We finally made it to Tallahassee around 11 am. We had a family rosary on Friday night with an open casket. Nell and Kit made a lei for Grandma, and she looked very lovely. Then we had a pizza party at our house with the Doyles and Skillings. And I finally got to go swimming for the first time this year, it was just great.
Saturday morning was the funeral. It was really very nice. Many of Mom's friends and family friends came, even a few of Grandma's friends were there. (Grandma's friends were a surprise as most of them have died or are in nursing homes.) I did two readings at the funeral and Catherine wrote and read a lovely eulogy. I am going to try and get her to type it up, so that we can share it with others. We got lots of nice cards. My high school journalism teacher was one of the first cards my mom received. She even sent the obit that was in the paper to show her journalism roots. After the burial, we went back to the Skillings for lunch.
Saturday evening we went to a party for Catherine's best friend from high school, Mary. She is joining a convent in Michigan this week. It was a very nice party and all of her family gave little speeches.
Sunday morning, I had to take Matt and Uncle Bobby to the airport for their 7 am flights. Then it was back to bed for me. Church at 10:30, and thats about all. The other diaster of the weekend (besides the departure flight), is that Matt flew in before me, but I forgot to give him the keys to the car and house...so he had to call a friend to get him at the airport, and then wait most of the day for the landlord to let him in the house. Now just because I had the car keys, doesn't mean he didn't have to come back out to the airport. He had the parking ticket...so he had to come out and to give that to me.
Mom and I spent a long time going through Grandma's things...I will write more about the treasures we found another time.
