Jesus Camp
WOW. Just WOW. Have you seen Jesus Camp? We watched it on Friday night and it was really scary. In the movie they claim that 25% of the American population is Evangelical. I can't really find anything to support this claim that they make. Hopefully it isn't really true, because if it is I am frightened. If you haven't seen this movie I recommend it, if just for the scariness of the whole thing. The main character Becky Fischer traveled to promote the movie saying it is true and a good representation of what they are about, so I don't feel that it is being unfair to them if she helped to promote the movie. You might not want to read any further if you haven't seen the movie as I am going to talk about some highlights.
Some of the things I found most disturbing in the movie:
1. "If Harry Potter had lived during Biblical times he would have been put to death." Last I checked Harry Potter was a fictional book not based on anything truthful. Are the kids unable to differentiate between fiction and real life?
2. Total disbelief in science. "Did you get to the part yet where they say that science hasn't proven anything?" Here they were talking about evolution, but in general they repeat many times how science is trash. But then they are there using microphones and fancy sound systems. Weren't those designed using science?
3. One little girl goes on about "dead" churches, where God is not present. This is in the deleted scenes. She goes on to say that "dead" churches are where we sit and listen and prayer responses or more structured prayer (kind of like most churches in the world). She says that God is not present unless we are all yelling out "Hallelujah" and speaking in tongues. So apparently God is not present in most churches. All morning today we were joking that we went to a dead church.
4. The things they pray for are kind of bizarre. Not to say that there is anything wrong with praying or even occasionally praying for something a little unusual, but during the big assembly thing they were praying for every little thing, such as "Lord, please bless this microphone, that it works properly, Lord, please keep the electricity on, Lord, please..." They went on and on.
